PLEASE REMEMBER, THESE ARE NOT 'STAND ALONE' NOTES, and were designed for my classes for use alongside the Salters resources - Chemical Ideas, Chemical Storylines, Practical Activities-Investigations and the AS-A2 Revision guides all published by Heinemann Secondary Series, to reduce the reading workload and offer a study strategy. From your teacher (not me!), its handy to have the answers to the Chemical Ideas, Storylines Assignments and Activities Questions side by side with the texts and these strategy pages. You haven't time to redo the Q's but a quick read of the Q's and connecting with the official answers is valuable revision.

DP UNIT TEST

Unit DP Learning Outcomes

KEY: CS = Chemical storylines, CI = Chemical Ideas, Act = Activity: after O ticked be able to

  1. O show awareness of the historical development of condensation polymers (polyamides like Nylon and Kevlar, polyesters like PET and poly-ether-ether-ketones like PEEK); [CS DP2/3/4/5]
  2. O distinguish between addition and condensation polymerisation eg polyalkene and polyamide formation [CS PR1 & DP2/3/4/5/6; Act DP2.1; CI 5.5 part 1 (revise) part 2 (new)/13.5/13.8]
  3. O predict the structural formula of the condensation polymer formed from the given monomer(s), and vice versa; [CS DP2/3/4/5 Ass 1/2/4/5; Act DP2.1/4; CI 5.5 part 2/13.5/13.8]
  4. O describe and explain the characteristic properties of carboxylic acids, including: (i) acidic nature, (ii) ester formation with alcohols and phenols; [CI 13.4/13.5]
  5. O describe the hydrolysis of esters (reaction conditions, catalysts, equations with H2O or NaOH, but details of mechanism are not required); [CI 13.5]
  6. O draw/recognise members of the following homologous series: (i) acyl chlorides, (ii) amines and (iii) amides (prim or N substituted (sec) amides); [CI 13.3/13.8 and other acid derivatives in CI 13.3/13.4/13.5] but note that any previously encountered organic functional group/homologous series can be encountered
  7. O use systematic nomenclature to name simple primary amines; [CI 13.8]
  8. O describe and explain the characteristic properties of the amino group -NH2, including: (i) basic nature (eg reaction with acids and water); (ii) ligand action (see also SS); (iii) nucleophilic nature and (iv) acylation (with eg acid chloride or acid anhydride); [CI 13.8]
  9. O describe the reaction between a primary amine and an acyl chloride to produce a substituted (sec) amide including nylon formation (be able to name eg nylon-x,y); [CS DP2; Act DP2.1; CI 13.8]
  10. O describe the hydrolysis of esters RCOOR', amides (prim, R-CONH2) and N-substituted amides (sec, R-CONH-R') including nylons; [Act DP2.2; CI 13.5, CI 13.8] include reaction conditions and catalysis by acid or alkali, and watch out for the three permutations on the equation with eg H2O, HCl or NaOH.
  11. O recall the procedures for preparing and purifying an organic solid product; eg reflux, reduced pressure filtration, recrystallisation (and melting point for purity check) [Act DP 2.2 and revise WM2/5.1]
  12. O explain the properties of condensation polymers in terms of intermolecular attractions eg H bonding in nylon or permanent dipole - permanent dipole interactions in PET; [CS DP2/3/4/5/6 Ass 2/3/4; Act DP4; CI 5.4/5.5 part 2] see also LO's 14.-16.
  13. O describe and explain the effect of temperature changes on polymers; [Act DP5; CI 5.5  part 1 (revise) part 2 (new)]
  14. O relate the properties of polymers to their molecular structure, and make predictions about the properties of a polymer (eg polyester PET, polyamides NYLON and KEVLAR, polyether-ether-ether-ketone PEEK); [CS DP2/3/4/5/6 Ass 3/4/5; Act DP4/5/6; CI 5.4/5.5 parts1 and 2] see also LO's 12./15./16.
  15. O show awareness of the ways that chemists can modify the properties of a polymer by physical and chemical means (including the use of co-polymers), to meet particular needs (eg polyester PET, polyamides NYLON and KEVLAR, polyether-ether-ketone PEEK and linear low density poly(ethene) lldpe ); [CS DP1/2/3/4/5/6 Ass3; CI 5.5 parts 1 and 2]
  16. O use given data to design a polymer for a particular purpose (eg polyesters like PET, polyamides like NYLON and KEVLAR, polyether/ketone PEEK and linear low density poly(ethene) lldpe); [CS DP2/3/4 Ass 3; CI 5.5 part 2]
  17. O discuss issues relating to the disposal and recycling of polymers and the conservation of resources used in polymer manufacture; [CS DP7 Ass 6]
