4. The very scenic North Wales A55 trunk coast road to Anglesey and the A5 road to Holyhead to catch the ferry to Dublin or Dun Laoghaire, Ireland

Scenes from Wales

A great piece of motoring, stunning North Wales scenery, and that's even before getting the ferry to the beautiful country of Ireland

The brilliant white and attractive church at St Asaph by the side of the A55 dual carriageway, beyond which is a lovely coastal run by road to the island of Anglesey.

Looking across Colywn Bay to Landudno and the head of Great Orme on the right of the photographs.

Quite a good scenic road route.

A windfarm out in the Irish Sea and looking towards Llandudno and the cliffs of the Great Orme as we take a North Wales Coast break on our way back to Holyhead and the ferry to Dublin. On a hot day like this a wind farm for electrical energy augers well for the future! The view below is from the pebble beach looking across Colwyn Bay to Landudno and the Great Orme.

Approaching Conwy (Conway) on the A55

Approaching, and going through the tunnel under the River Conwy at the town of Conwy, appropriately being passed by a Welsh red dragon coach!

The River Conwy estuary from the A55 road

Leaving Conwy and approaching the tunnels to Penmaenmawr, with a continuous scenic background.

The first tunnel on the A55 after Conwy heading towards Penmaenmawr

The first tunnel on leaving Penmaenmawr or approaching Conwy.

The sea, beach and the great quarry above Penmaenmawr.

The hills above Penmaenmawr and Conwy, looking in the Conwy direction as you approach the tunnels into Conwy.

Penmaenmawr, quite a magnificent view on this busy tourist scenic route, here, looking in the Bangor direction, straight ahead is a great quarry all over the side of the mountain - is it still in use?

The Anglesey Island is on the distant right of the image.

The huge quarry at Penmaenmawr

After the tunnels, descending into Penmaenmawr, emerging from the Pen-y-Clip tunnels looking towards the hills above Conwy.

Approaching Llanfairfechan from the Bangor direction, and the hills above Penmaenmawr.

Going over the A5 road bridge over the Menai Straits and coasting along the A5 directly across Anglesey Island to Holy Island and Holyhead with the Welsh mountains on the mainland.

A quick glance east of the Telford suspension bridge over the Menai Straits, completed in 1826.

Looking west along the Menai straits as you cross the A5 Menai Straits road bridge.

The huge shed of Holyhead Station, large brick walls and glass roof

From the ferry terminal you can look across the inner harbour to the town of Holyhead, and prominent in the town's foreground is the grey stone building of the Church of ?, Holyhead.

The high and beautiful Welsh mountains can be faintly seen on the mainland of North Wales.

... and in no time at all, Holyhead, on the Island of Anglesey Wales, come into view.

Same view leaving or approaching the Port of Holyhead on Holy Island, Anglesey, on the ferry for Dublin or Dun Laoghaire in Ireland (from the Stena Plus 'saloon')
