The medieval Magazine
Gatehouse in the centre of the City of Leicester is
contemporary with the demise of Richard III, so no surprise
that a pub is named after him! However, he actually stayed
at the Blue Boar before riding out to meet his fate at the
battle of Bosworth Field in 1485.
The National Space Centre at
Leicester is well worth a visit and there is nothing more
atmospheric than eating below some rocket engines! When
entering the foyer you are greeted by the Russian Soyuz
space capsule!
Next too the National Space
Center is the Abbey Pumping Station Museum which has a small
cafe. There are lots of exhibits including old motorcycles,
a great steam shovel, a working steam engine train and of
course the great wheels and cylinders of the massive water
pumping engine that enabled Leicester to pump all of its
sewage to the water treatment plant at Beaumont Leys when it
was built in the late 19th century.
The relatively new Phoenix Cafe,
Theatre, Cinema, 'Music Venue' and Bar is not too far from
the medieval Guildhall representing somewhat different
contrasting black and white styles of architecture!
