Gordale Scar, Yorkshire Dales National Park, North Yorkshire, Northern England

Gordale Scar is another fabulous picnic spot in the Yorkshire Dales National park. There is a lovely short walk from Gordale Scar to the equally spectacular Malham Cove. Gordale Scar is set in classic limestone country with the lower fields contained within handsome dry stone walls. The 'scar' itself was carved out by melt water under one of the many ice-age sheets that covered northern England. Its probable that the Gordale gorge was formed by the collapse of the roof of a huge limestone cavern, i.e. of the type that potholers just love in the Dales!
