2. Some tourist attractions - the Castle and Beck Isle Museum

Pickeing Castle

The castle entrance waits patiently in the winter sunshine for the onslaught of the summer tourists. The original castle was built by William the Conqueror in 1069-70. Most of the surviving buildings on the castle mound date from the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries.

Beck Isle Museum, Pickering

The Beck Isle museum is housed in a splendid Regency stone building. The handsome structure houses exhibitions illustrating the life and times in the domestic and social life of the area over the past few hundred years.

* Pickering in Ryedale, close to the North York Moors, is a lovely friendly town and home to the start of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, a major tourist attraction.   There are lots of other villages also worth visiting with good walking or pleasant car driving in between them, as well as the many old churches and other historic buildings for the visitor to explore. *
