Mosaics were created throughout the Roman Empire and adorned public buildings private houses with rich and colourful decorations.

Mosaics were usually made of small cubes (tesserae) of stone and glass and laid close together to build up a pattern or picture e.g. animal scenes.

Some of the best examples come from Halicarnassus and Ephesus in Turkey and from Carthage and Utica in Turkey.

These mosaics are exhibited in the Western gallery of Roman Britain.

The top mosaics depict from 4th century AD Halicarnassus.

Below are mosaics of fine patterns (3rd century AD, Utica) and dolphins from 4th century AD Halicarnassus.
