A lovely pleasing River Lune Walk

from Ruskin's View to the Devil's Bridge

Cumbria (ex Cumberland & Westmorland)

 Lake District & North-West Index

By the Ruskin's View viewpoint by Church Brow is a plaque to commemorate the merging of the old county of Westmorland into the new county of Cumbria.

In 1875 the art critic writer and artist John Ruskin declared the view across the River Lune Valley as "One of the loveliest views in England". The 'Ruskin View' was painted by the great landscape artist Turner in 1822.

From Ruskin's View by Church Brow you can descend by steps to the south-west bank of the River Lune and then walk along on a good track to the equally famous Devil's Bridge.

On a fine summers day, as soon as you get near the Devil's Bridge you find people relaxing by the River Lune, a fine place for a picnic!

Just north of the Devil's Bridge the shingled banks of the River Lune are a popular sun-bathing and paddling spot.

The view north from the parapet of the Devil's Bridge. The Devil's Bridge at one time carried the Skipton to Kendal road over the River Lune. Devil's Bridge dates from around 1370 and is constructed of fine gritstone ashlar. It has three splendid round arched spans. The piers of Devil's Bridge are hexagonal, extend upwards to provide pedestrian refuges, but not from passing traffic anymore.

The bridge was probably built by the monks of St Mary's Abbey, York. In common with many bridges of the same name, legend holds that the Devil appeared to an old woman, promising to build a bridge in exchange for the first soul to cross over it. When the bridge was finished, the woman threw bread over the bridge and her dog chased after it, thereby outwitting the Devil. The Devil's Bridge was repaired in 1705 and re-pointed in 1829 using Roman-style cement. Devil's Bridge proved insufficient for modern traffic, and with the numbers of vehicles increasing the bridge was closed to vehicular traffic in 1932 and road traffic now crosses the river by the Stanley Bridge built in the 1930s.

The Devil's Bridge is a grade I listed structure and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. As you can see in the photograph above, the section of river underneath Devil's Bridge is popular with scuba divers because of the relatively easy access and egress, deep rock pools and good visibility. People like to swim across at this point and Devil's Bridge is popular for illegal "tombstoning" (bridge/rock/pier diving) and sadly, at least one death has been recorded at Devil's Bridge.

The newer Stanley bridge can be seen when looking south under the Devil's Bridge.
