44. Walking from Glenridding on Ullswater
English Lake District, Cumbria (ex Cumberland/Westmorland)
Glenridding is a village situated at the southern end of Ullswater, in the English Lake District National Park of England. The village is popular with mountain walkers who can start here to climb England's third highest mountain, Helvellyn. Glenridding village has ample accommodation including two Youth Hostels and camping sites. Glenridding House provides luxury Bed and Breakfast accommodation across the road from the Ullswater tourist information centre.
Its good to say that in early May 2016 most of Glenridding was back in business after the disastrous winter flooding of 2015-2016. Its good centre for walking and we chose a short circular walk up to the disused Greenside lead mine below Stang End at the eastern end of Glenridding Common.
There is suitable parking by the Fellbites cafe & restaurant.
We walked west from Glenridding village on the south bank of Glenridding Beck.
Looking up to Birkhouse Moor.
On your right is the great mass of Sheffield Pike.
Looking east back down the path to Glenridding.
Looking west up the Glenridding valley to the disused mine site.

The Greenside disused lead mine in Glenridding.
Here, well above the village of Glenridding is the site of the former Greenside Mine, once the largest lead mine in the Lake District. Lead ore was discovered in the 18th century and the site was mined from the second half of the 18th century until the mine closed in 1962. The houses and businesses of the local economy of Glenridding would not have existed without the working of Greenside lead mine.
Just below Greenside disused mine on the north bank of Glenridding Beck is the YHA Helvellyn, Glenridding Youth Hostel Accommodation. A good base for climbing Helvellyn.
Walking east back down towards Glenridding with the hills and crags of Patterdale Common and Place Fell in the distance.
On the return route we took an upper path towards Lanty's Tarn
Chris, Phil T., Molly and Phil B.
A good view of the southern end of Ullswater and Glenridding village.
A pause to rest and reflect on? with Sheffield Pike beyond.
Lanty's Tarn before dropping down back into Glenridding and the cafe!
The completely refurbished (after the flooding) Helvellyn Country Kitchen cafe is good place for refreshment, licensed and provides a variety of drinks, snacks and meals.
The GLENRIDDING HOTEL is slowly coming back to life in May 2016!
THE INN ON THE LAKE and the Ramblers Bar is complex offering drinks and meals in the restaurant and lounge bar and a relaxing outside view of Ullswater.
Glenridding is the home base of the famous 'Ullswater Steamers', five boats are operated and in the foreground is one the smaller tourist craft.
The "Lady of the lake" is one the larger boats for tourist pleasure cruises.
Looking to the southern end of Ullswater.
and the end of a great day out in Glenridding, but sadly, not enough time to take a pleasure cruise!
