March 2010, and still recovering from the devastating floods of November 2009

The junction of Castlegate (left upto the castle) and Market Place on the right, now a pedestrianised area. The first market was established in 1221 and still going strong Marketplace today! In the Georgian period of the 18th and 19th centuries Cockermouth town grew in importance for local trading and local manufacturing industries.

Georgian houses in Market Place including the Castle Bar. There are ample good pubs, hotels and cafes in Cockermouth.

Part of Cockermouth Castle (13th-14th century buildings) where the Dowager Lady Egremont lives.

Above is a selection of neatly painted attractive Georgian houses in Kirkgate, with the Castle, one the oldest historic areas of Cockermouth. The middle right shows 'The Bitter End' pub (Alehouse and Brewery) which claims to have Cumbria's smallest brewery!

The red sandstone HSBC building.

The River Cocker which flows down into the even bigger River Derwent - these overflowing rivers caused the devastating floods of 2009.

The tourist information centre is housed in a Georgian building below the Parish Church of All Saints, Cockermouth.

There was originally a beautiful medieval church dating from the early 13th century to the 14th century, however it was demolished as unsafe in 1711 and a new church was built incorporating the tower. This was the church William and Dorothy Wordsworth were baptised in (1770). This church was destroyed by fire in 1850. The present day All Saints is a large church built of sandstone with a tall crossing tower (180 ft to tip of elegant spire) with a tall recessed tower and consecrated in 1854.

The pillars of the nave and the north aisle.

A selection of pictures of the fine Victorian stained glass windows of All Saints Church (mainly from 1874 - 1881 in memory of the Revd. Eldred Green).
