6. Walking in Borrowdale - Walla Crag - Derwent Water - Keswick Walk

Despite the weather an excellent and most beautiful walk unfolded in March 2010.

We parked below Walla Crag in a lay-by close to Lake Derwent Water on the B5289 Borrowdale road that runs south from Keswick on the eastern side of Derwent Water.

Walking north along the shoreline towards Keswick, but looking south down Derwent Water.

Scots Pines on the eastern shore of Derwent Water.

The incredible exposed root system of a Scots Pine.

Looking across the mountains west of Derwent Water.

A Lebanon Cedar (cedrus libani)

More National Trust property, The Ings and a hint of the weather improving!

Approaching the National Trust Property of Friar's Crag.

The silhouette of trees on the rocky outcrop of Friar's Crag on which stands a memorial to the art critic John Ruskin, a man who greatly appreciated the landscape of the Lake District at first hand and from the paintings of the great artists of his day.

The landing stages and tourist cruisers at Keswick where turn into Cockshot Wood.

The Lakeland fells west of Keswick from the highest rocky point in Castlehead Wood.

A spot of sunshine on the water below Cat Bells and Skelgill Bank. Above and below are also views from the high rocky point in Castlehead Wood

Looking north with a view of the Skiddaw range of hills-fells and mountains from the path up to Rakefoot.

View looking west from the path through Castlerigg to Rakefoot.

Walla Crag in the centre - the path winds its way up round to the left and you then go over the top of Walla crag.

Looking north-east to the cloud topped Blease Fell.

Looking north-west towards Bassenthwaite Lake with cloud covered Skiddaw on the right..

Derwent Water, Keswick and Bassenthwaite Lake, viewed from the highest point above Walla Crag near Lady's Rake.

Coming down of the track above Walla Crag.

The mountains west of Derwent Water.

One of a whole series of water falls in Cat Gill.

The highest section of Walla Crag above the lay-by we parked in.

Yet again, a great day out in Lakeland.
