(a) Holy Trinity Parish Church, Kendal

Holy Trinity Church is externally a typical prosperous (from wool) Perpendicular town church.

Holy Trinity consists of a large rectangle with double aisles and no obvious extension for a chancel.

Internally, the architecture is quite mixed from medieval to a major Victorian restoration in 1850-1852.

The heraldic coat of arms of Kendal at the end of a pew in the nave. Kendal’s Coat of Arms, the Town’s coat-of-arms, which first appears on a Speed map printed in 1610, reflects these historical influences on Kendal. It has a gold background depicting a cowhide whilst the teasel (a prickly plant which dries like a sharp hairbrush) and bale hooks found in each of the sections of the shield represent the wool trade. The motto, pannus mihi panis, is often interpreted as ‘wool is my bread’ which would underline the importance of the sheep wool industry which, for centuries, supported the people of this busy town.

Near the East Window is a sculpture by Josefina de Vasconcellos ’The Family of Man’. The setting is a contemporary Refugee Camp in the Middle East. Huddled together, under an old blanket are Mary, Jesus and three children representing the African, European and Oriental peoples of the world.

Left: The coat of arms crest of the Strickland family. The English surname Strickland is derived from the Norse word Stercaland, which is found in Westmorland to the south of Penrith and become a family name in 1179, when Walter de Castlecarrock married Christian de Leteham, an heiress to the local estate that now includes the villages of Great Strickland and Little Strickland. The family coat of arms is Sable three escalopes Argent, a black shield with three escalopes (sea shells).

Right: A fragment of medieval stained glass from the 15th century, the head of a King.

(b) The Friends Meeting House and the Quaker Tapestry

The plain and simple room Quakers meet in, contrasts sharply with elaborate decoration and stained glass windows of the C of E and RC churches!
