County Kilkenny near Inistioge 65. Woodstock Gardens and Arboretum These gardens and arboretum are a great pleasure to walk around and the variety of trees seem endless. Woodstock Gardens and Arboretum are located near the village of Inistioge and were once considered one of the great gardens of Ireland. The gardens are now (2010) undergoing restoration and features include the flower terraces, winter garden, monkey puzzle walk, the noble fir walk and the arboretum. The design and concept of the gardens are due to Colonel William Tighe and his wife Lady Louisa Lennox between 1840and 1900.
The ruins of Woodstock House built in 1745. It was destroyed in a fire in 1922 and is somewhat unstable!
The Garden Terrace Winter, the steps down from it originally lead to the croquet lawn!
The Winter Garden Terrace looks out to the rolling hills north-east of Woodstock House.
The arboretum was the focus of a considerable amount of exotic tree planting in the 19th century. The area was chosen to best display the growing trees and apparently visitors in the 1860s and 1870s were very impressed with what they saw.
