37. Dysert O'Dea - A History Trail, near Corofin, County Clare - Part 1 Dysert O'Dea Castle, St Tolá's Cross & Abbey

Dysert O'Dea Castle is south of Corofin, east of the R460 Inagh road and west of the R476 Ennis road. At the castle museum you can by a history trail map that can be followed on foot or car.

Dysert O'Dea Castle was built in AD 1480 and is typical of a 15th century tower house and was the home of the O'Dea chiefs until 1692. - Dysert O'Dea near Corofin, County Clare, West of Ireland

After the castle you can head off to St Tola's Cross.

St Tola's High Cross is a magnificent 12th century piece of stone carving. St Tola died somewhere between AD 733 and 737. The east face depicts a stylised crucifixion on the cross head with the figure of a bishop below.

After passing St Tola's cross you continue on down to the ruins of Dysert O'Dea Abbey (details of church on next page).
