37. Dysert O'Dea - A History Trail, near Corofin, County Clare - Part 1 Dysert O'Dea Castle, St Tolá's Cross & Abbey Dysert O'Dea Castle is south of Corofin, east of the R460 Inagh road and west of the R476 Ennis road. At the castle museum you can by a history trail map that can be followed on foot or car.
Dysert O'Dea Castle was built in AD 1470-1490 and is typical of a 15th century tower house and was the home of the O'Dea chiefs until 1692.
You can go to the top of the tower and look out over the battlements after pottering around the castle museum and interpretive centre displays ...
.... before or after some refreshment in the cafe!
After the castle you can head off to St Tola's Cross.
St Tola's High Cross is a magnificent 12th century piece of stone carving. St Tola died somewhere between AD 733 and 737. The east face depicts a stylised crucifixion on the cross head with the figure of a bishop below.
After passing St Tola's cross you continue on down to the ruins of Dysert O'Dea Abbey (details of church on next page).
