(right) The French Church and memorial to Father Luke Wadding (1588-1657), a Franciscan priest and scholar who did much to support the training of priests and sought to promote the religious and civil rights of Catholics in the first half of the 17th century. On the left of the statue (not shown) is the Greyfriars Municipal Art Gallery and heritage centre.
The ruins of the medieval French Church.
The ruins of the Dominican Priory (Black Friars Abbey). Founded in 1223 at the request of the 'Citizens'. It was suppressed in 1541 under Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries and turned to secular use. It was used as a courthouse up to the 18th century but is now derelict. * Glorious Ireland for good walking, family or mini-break holidays and something for every tourist visiting this beautiful and friendly country.
