28. A two day trip to Sedbergh, The Howgill Fells and Dentdale: Part 3 - Overnight in Dent Village, Dentdale
View from our bedroom window in the Sun Inn, at the top of Main Street, Dent Village, Dentdale, East Cumbria.
The main street of Dent Village with the Sun Inn at the top and on the right is a memorial stone to Adam Sedgwick (1785-1873) the great pioneering geologist and Professor of Geology at Cambridge University.
St Andrew's Church, Dent is essentially a 15th century structure but with some earlier work.
The tower was apparently rebuilt in 1789 and the church as a whole restored in 1889.
A peaceful and beautiful setting to take a pause from walking!
The medieval arches of the nave overlook the mainly 17th century pews, pulpit and font cover .
The fine stain glass of the east window above the alter. The chancel floor made of Dent Marble bordered with limestone marble from Barrow.
The Norman font and 17th century wooden cover, a piscina and a desk from the old and historic Dent Grammar School. A piscina was a washing place for the Mass or Communion vessels with a drain so that the water flowed out onto the consecrated ground of the churchyard.
Three south windows hold memorial stained glass to the Sedgwick family and the middle one (left picture), as well as, appropriately, the mighty rock in Main Street (right picture), commemorate the life and work of Adam Sedgwick (1785-1873) the great and famous pioneering geologist and Professor of Geology at Cambridge University.
Another of the fine stain glass windows in St Andrew's Church, Dent Village, Dentdale, East Cumbria, but now onto the 2nd walk in the Howgills area. Northern England docspics images photos © Phil Brown |
