27. A two day trip to Sedbergh, The Howgill Fells and Dentdale: Part 2b - A long walk over the Howgills - Cautley Spout to the Calf summit and back over to Sedbergh
Above Cautley Spout you can look across to the magnificent Yarlside (639 m high) and down the valley to Cross Keys (a tiny white spot on the middle-far right of picture above!).
Above the Cautley waterfalls you follow the stream up a low valley and head for the Calf ...
... eventually reaching a broad 'shoulder' at Bram Rigg Top (672m, 2200 ft) and you turn up right to the Calf summit at 676m (2220 ft). The track on the right leads up to the Calf with its magnificent 360o views, sadly not best appreciated by my camera work.
Calf summit - north view from the old trig point.
Calf summit - east view to Baugh Fell and Wild Boar Fell.
Calf summit - south view towards Calders, Arant Haw and Winder of the Howgill Fells with Sedbergh out of sight. The return spectacular route to Sedbergh goes over the three nearest 'summits'.
Calf summit - west view towards the flat coastal plain of north Lancashire and south Cumbria and Morecambe Bay glistening in the distance.
You then head south over several of the Howgill summits with few people and only a few sheep and cairns for company. This the cairn on Calders (674m, 2200ft).
The views on the return leg are quite outstanding as you head over and down off Calders and on to Arant Haw (above right). Crook, Sickers Fell and Knott are to the left of Arant Haw.
After Calders (674m, 2200 ft) and Arant Haw (605m, 1993 ft), you look down on the left to where you had come along from Sedbergh ...
... and descending from Arant Haw, ahead is Winder (473m, 1551ft), but we bore left down into Sedbergh.
First glimpse of Sedbergh below the Howgills is seen by descending down to the left-east of Winder - a summit to be left for another walk.
Semi-wild horses on the Howgill Fells above Sedbergh.
Sedbergh fully in view and just a few stiles and pleasant green and narrow paths to go, after which a short drive to the Sun Inn in Dent for our B&B. (more on Sedbergh) THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST WALKS WE HAVE EVER DONE in the Yorkshire Dales National Park of North Yorkshire/East Cumbria AND IT IS QUITE SUPERB, full of varied-dramatic-scenic grandeur. * Page updated Oct 6th 2008 * EMAIL Phil Brown * digital images snapshots photographs pictures views scenes views pics photos snaps webshots of walks and interesting places to visit and stay © Phil Brown docspics 2008 * www.docbrown.info/docspics |
