1. Swaledale - Walking up Gunnerside Gill from Gunnerside Village Illustrates part of Walk 14 "Around Gunnerside" and all of Walk 16 "Gunnerside Gill" in Paul Hannon's "Walking Country - Swaledale" OR Walk 1 "Gunnerside Gill and Blakethwaite Dams" in Stephen I. Robinson's "Her Master's Walks - Swaledale"
Evidence of the old lead-silver mining is all around Gunnerside Gill with 'scars', waste tips and building ruins viewed from Jingle Pot Edge on the west side of Gunnerside Beck across to Melbecks Moor.
Ruined buildings of the once hot and busy Blakethwaite Smelt Mill from the mining operations in Gunnerside Gill on the banks of Gunnerside Beck.
More buildings from the mining operations with the landscape artist Peter M. Hicks in the foreground (link to his website near foot of page).
There is a good flow of water down Gunnerside Beck which would have kept the Blakethwaite Dams well filled (remains below).
* The Yorkshire Dales National Park in North Yorkshire and East Cumbria and the North Pennines form a wonderful part of Northern England to visit for walking or car touring holidays. The scenery is magnificent and the countryside, villages and towns rarely seem overcrowded and the people always friendly. There is lots to see and do and plenty of accommodation available from hostels, hotels, bed and breakfast, holiday cottages etc. whether for weeks or a weekend mini-break when holidaying in Swaledale, North Yorkshire. * page updated Oct 27th 2007 * EMAIL Phil Brown * Images-photographs-pictures-photos-webshots of walking in Gunnerside Gill, Swaledale © Dr W P Brown * |
