Scenes of Cleveland, North East England 17. A trip to Whitby on the River Esk Valley Railway Line Since writing this page a whole section has now been devoted to the Esk Valley Railway Line. A very beautiful scenic railway trip, a must for tourist or if you are from Middlesbrough. This is one of the most beautiful railway trips a tourist or 'Boro' resident could take in the UK.
Middlesbrough Station, for the start of a great and scenic train ride.
The dramatic outline of Roseberry Topping near Great Ayton (picture taken through carriage window).
Approaching Kildale Station with the Cleveland Hills in the background and you are now well into the County of North Yorkshire.
Crossing the River Esk when passing Danby Lodge, a North York Moors National Park Centre.
The Northern Rail train passing Danby Castle and Little Fryup Dale heading for Glaisdale and Egton Bridge.
The railway runs by many beautifully dramatic scenic dales situated off the Esk Valley ....
... and the River Esk is crossed many times before Whitby is reached.
The rolling farmland as the train heads for Sleights and Ruswarp ...
... and eventually into the popular seaside town of Whitby. The tourist attractions of St Mary's Church and Whitby Abbey can be seen in the centre of the horizon on the top of East Cliff.
