My Archive Steam Photos from the 1960s

60007 SIR NIGEL GRESLEY worked express passenger trains on the East Coast mainline, and has been allocated to the locomotive depots ('sheds') at Kings Cross, Grantham, New England, St Margaret's shed in Edinburgh and finally Aberdeen. 60007 is the holder of the post-war steam record speed of 112 miles per hour (180 km/h) achieved on 23rd May 1959 and carries a plaque to that effect. Like Mallard's earlier world record, this was done descending south down Stoke Summit. 60007 was withdrawn from service by British Railways in 1966 and was rescued from the scrap heap by the A4 Locomotive Society and is owned by Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Preservation Trust Ltd. and operated by the A4 Locomotive Society Ltd. on behalf of the Trust and currently (2015) lives on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway at their Grosmont depot and workshops.

60007 SIR NIGEL GRESLEY standing in Grosmont Shed yard looking magnificent after a repaint in April 2012. This LNER Class A4 4-6-2 Pacific locomotive was the 100th Pacific built by the LNER at the famous Doncaster 'Plant' works in 1937 (Doncaster Plant works number 1863 and LNER no. 4498) and was named after its designer, Sir Nigel Gresley, one of the most famous and successful locomotive designers from Great Britain. 60007 holds the post war speed record for a steam locomotive of 112 mph. Although (in 2012) it is 75 years old, it is no museum piece, and still regularly works mainline steam excursions at speeds of upto 75 mph as well as its fair share of work on the NYMR.

Wartime Weekend 2010: A4 Pacific 60007 SIR NIGEL GRESLEY about to move out from Grosmont depot.

60007 started life on the LNER in 1937 in the standard LNER garter blue of the Gresley A4 Pacifics but was repainted into wartime black with LNER markings in February 1942 during World War II. After the war, SIR NIGEL GRESLEY regained the LNER garter blue livery. Later, in 1952, 60007 was painted in British Railways brunswick green livery but as a preserved locomotive, 60007 is back in garter blue.

60007 was originally built with a single chimney and side valances covering the wheels, but the valances were removed to for more convenient maintenance and in 1957 60007 was fitted with a double chimney and Kylchap double blastpipe exhaust system.
